Liposuction Used for Breast Reduction Surgery
Liposuction is well-known for its use in body contouring, but you may be surprised to learn that it is also used in breast reduction procedures. While liposuction can successfully remove fat from popular areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, and buttocks, it is also useful for eliminating excess fat from the breasts. Female breast reduction and male breast reduction procedures may both employ liposuction to improve the appearance of the chest for women and men.
Liposuction in Female Breast Reduction
Breast reduction in women is performed to reduce the size of disproportionately large breasts. Many women undergo breast reduction in order to reduce or eliminate chronic pain and discomfort, reduce unwanted attention, improve clothing fit and body proportions, and help them to feel more confident and comfortable in their bodies.
Liposuction can help to accomplish this by removing excess fat from the breasts. This option as the sole technique to reduce breast size has fairly limited indications. Typically, it can be utilized in women who do not also need glandular breast tissue removed, are not very large, do not want larger skin incisions, are not interested in improving the overall breast shape, and don’t desire or need lifting up of the breasts on the chest wall. Liposuction can nonetheless reduce breast size with very few small, essentially imperceptible scars.
Liposuction in Male Breast Reduction
Male breast reduction is performed to eliminate excess fat and/or breast tissue in order to improve the contour of the chest and result in a more masculine appearance. Men with gynecomastia are often very self-conscious about their enlarged breasts which, in many cases, can appear quite feminine. This can lead to emotional and psychological discomfort, harassment and taunting, avoidance of certain sports and outdoor activities, and even eating disorders.
Liposuction can remove fat from the male chest to create a more masculine chest contour and improve the quality of life. This technique is used in most cases of gynecomastia except where the sole cause of the enlargement is glandular tissue (which can’t be removed by liposuction).
Liposuction can help improve the appearance and self-confidence of both men and women through these breast reduction procedures. Eliminating unwanted fat from the chest area with liposuction can restore a more natural and aesthetically pleasing body shape.
