Do I Need Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia is a formal term describing the occurrence of enlarged breasts in men. This condition may cause severe psychological distress, embarrassment, negative self-image issues, depression, a lack of confidence and even eating disorders. Having gynecomastia can cause a man to dread or even avoid participating in any activity where it’s traditional to remove one’s shirt, such as playing sports and swimming. This condition may significantly affect dating experiences or even the desire to date, social interactions and one’s overall quality of life.
Here are some reasons why gynecomastia develops, how to identify it, and how to treat it.
Why Gynecomastia Develops
The growth of male breasts is often associated with elevated hormone levels. When boys begin to go through puberty, they may develop unusual growth or a mass in their breasts, particularly deep to the nipples. In a majority of these cases, the enlargement or masses will completely resolve on its own after puberty.
Additionally, hormonal imbalances caused by various factors can contribute to the development of gynecomastia at any point in life. Aging, genetic disorders, obesity, and certain diseases such as chronic liver disease can also cause this condition. Other common causes include the use and abuse of steroids and illicit drugs. Gynecomastia may also be an unfortunate side effect of certain medications.
How to Identify Gynecomastia
Generally speaking, gynecomastia can be identified by the affected male who recognizes that his chest shows signs of enlarged breast tissue that may even look like that of a female. The degree of involvement can range in severity from minor gynecomastia that is perceived only by the affected male to large, overly projecting and even drooping breasts that are clearly noticeable and can be “D” cup sized or even larger.
A board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Turkeltaub can you identify the relative degree of “severity” of your gynecomastia and offer appropriate options for treatment.
How to Treat Gynecomastia
Typically and with a few exceptions, gynecomastia does not resolve completely on its own without surgical intervention. In those men whose enlarged breasts are related to obesity, a strict diet and exercise leading to a substantial weight loss may either improve or eliminate the gynecomastia.
The plastic surgery treatments for gynecomastia that Dr. Turkeltaub use include ultrasonic assisted liposuction and/or direct excision of the enlarged breast tissue and excess fat. In those individuals with markedly enlarged breasts with excess and even droopy skin, removal of the redundant skin may be indicated.
After gynecomastia has been corrected with surgery, the patient can experience significant and rewarding physical, psychological, and emotional benefits from his improved appearance.
